Nanook Volleyball Visits Local Elementary Schools

FAIRBANKS – Over the past month, the University of Alaska volleyball team has been engaged in various community outreach activities with trips to Weller and Ladd Elementary schools.

Last month, the Nanook spikers participated in several events at Weller Elementary, including reading to the students. There, the elementary students put on a parade with each class themed as its collective favorite book. Following the reading activities, the Nanook team scrimmaged the Weller teachers on in front of the entertained students.

"These team excursions are always the highlight of the offseason," said Lilah Hudson. "We had the opportunity to visit an exceptional school with a fabulous student body and administrative staff. The experience was great for everyone involved."

A few days later, the team went to Ladd Elementary to serve breakfast to the students and the students' parents. During the meal, the Nanooks intermingled with those they served, engaging in conversations with both the students and their parents.

Said Sam Harthun, "We love having the change to go to Ladd each year. All of us are extremely thankful for the opportunity to serve our community, especially the large portion of military families that were present."

Alaska continues to prepare for the start of the 2015-16 season with its offseason workouts and practices. The season opens up with the Flint Hills Resources Nanook Classic on September 4 and 5.
