FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The Alaska hockey program got the 2013-14 year started with an exciting Blue versus Gold intrasquad exhibition game where regulation was not enough but it was Blue who conquered Gold with a 3-2 shootout victory Saturday night at Patty Ice Arena.

Despite a game-tying score for Gold by senior left wing Colton Beck (Langley, British Columbia/Business Administration) with only 3:42 remaining in the second, Blue was able put it together in the shootout.

Sophomore defenseman Colton Parayko (St. Albert, Alberta/Business Administration) and sophomore center Tyler Morley (Burnaby, British Columbia/Business Administration both buried their shootout attempts and junior netminder Sean Cahill (Calgary, Alberta/Business Administration) denied Gold on both of its attempts to notch a 2-0 shootout win and a 3-2 victory for the game.

Redshirt junior Jared Larson (Apple Valley, Minn./Business Administration) was named the first star as he led the Blue squad with one goal and one assist while sophomore defenseman J.D. Peterson (Orange, Calif./Communication) also lit the lamp for Blue. Morley was named the second star with one assist and the game winner in the shootout.

For Gold, Beck was named the game's third star with one goal and rookie left wing Josh Erickson (Roseau, Minn./General Studies) scored a first period goal to open the scoring for Gold.

The Nanooks played a pair of 25-minute periods with a running clock and decided to forego overtime with the game squared at 2-2 after the 50 minutes and head straight to a best-of-three shootout.

In between the first and second, the team participated in an on-ice skills challenge. Junior left wing Nolan Youngmun (Anchorage, Alaska/Petroleum Engineering) triumphed in the fastest skater competition, junior defenseman Nolan Kaiser (Calgary, Alberta/Business Administration) fired a 102 MPH slap shot to win the hardest shot and both Cahill and freshman Davis Jones (St. Albert, Alberta/Elementary Education) each stopped seven shots in the shootout to tie for the team best.

Alaska returns to action next Saturday, Oct. 5 when it closes out its exhibition schedule against University of British Columbia at 5:37 p.m. inside the Carlson Center. Children 12 and under wearing a hockey jersey will be admitted free of charge.
