Youth Dominates in Swimming's Annual Blue-Gold Pentathlon Meet

Meet Results

FAIRBANKS, Alaska –
Youth dominated the pool Saturday, as underclassmen gathered 14 combined top five finishes, including wins in all five individual events, during the annual Blue-Gold Pentathlon meet at the Patty Center Pool.

Freshman Victoria Adams (Anchorage, Alaska/Accounting) was named the Swimmer of the Meet after winning three events and accumulating the lowest total time through all five individual events at 5 minutes, 11.82 seconds – more than 11 seconds better than the next-best total time.

Adams won the 100-yard butterfly in 58.63, the 100 backstroke in 58.53 and the 100 individual medley in 1:01.67. She was also second in the 100 freestyle in 55.59. Freshman Kathryn Pound (Pahiatua, New Zeland/Business Administration) out-touched Adams in the 100 free by 0.17 seconds (55.42) to tally another victory for the freshman class.

Adams and Pound also made waves in the meet's opening event – the 200 medley relay. Adams gave her Blue team a lead after swimming the first leg, but Pound carried the Gold team back into the lead for good in the third leg, with junior Gabi Summers (Cheyenne, Wyo./Foreign Language) closing out the win with a strong anchor freestyle leg.

Summers had the meet's second-best overall time at 5:23.56. She had five top-four finishes on the day, along with the relay win. Pound was third overall at 5:23.96. Senior co-captain Bente Heller (Hamburg, Germany/Psychology) was fourth in 5:24.26, and junior co-captain Danielle Lyons (Prince Albert, Saskatchewan/Biological Sciences) rounded out the top five at 5:25.34.

Also winning for the underclassmen was sophomore Eileen Audette (Seward, Alaska/Fisheries), who took the 100 breaststroke in 1:13.52. Audette joined Pound on the Blue team's winning 200 medley relay team as well.

Adams and Heller went head-to-head all meet long, finishing 1-2 in back-to-back events (100 fly, 100 back) and going 2-3 in the 100 freestyle behind Pound. Adams won the 100 butterfly going away by nearly three seconds over Heller (58.63 to 1:01.36), but the 100 backstroke – the event Heller is the reigning national champion in – was a much different story.

Adams stayed close to Heller through the first 75 yards, but Heller held a 1/2-body length's advantage. Heller still led after the final turn, but Adams began making her move with about 17 yards to go in the race. Adams' push was just enough to not only make up the deficit, but out-touch Heller for the win by 2-hundredths of a second, 58.53-58.55.

The Nanooks open their regular season at home with a two-day dual meet against Pacific Collegiate Swimming and Diving Conference opponent Biola on Oct. 25-26 at the Patty Center Pool.
