FAIRBANKS, AK – Alaska Nanooks women’s skiing coach Scott Jerome announced the signing of Heidi O’Connor Brook of Whitehorse, Yukon, to a National Letter of Intent. She will enter the University of Alaska Fairbanks as a freshman in the fall with four years of NCAA eligibility remaining.

"I am very pleased that we have another Yukon skier joining our program,” said Jerome. “Heidi has been a solid junior skier in Canada for several seasons. She is a hard worker and will make her mark both in the classroom as well on the ski trails."

An eight-year member of the Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club, O’Connor-Brook earned the Yukon Award of Excellence in 2006 and 2009, and the Most Improved Female Athlete of the Year in 2007.

In 2006, O’Connor-Brook earned two gold medals and one bronze in the Western Ski Championships. She raced her way to a podium spot and bronze medal in the Canada games in 2007 and in 2008, earned 8th place at the Canadian Nationals. This past season, O’Connor-Brook skied in the Nation Ski Championships, earning 2nd, 4th, and 5th place in various junior races.

“Being from Whitehorse, Heidi obviously knows about cold weather training,” Jerome added. “The transition to Fairbanks should be relatively easy for her.”

A 2010 graduate of FH Collins Secondary School, O’Connor-Brook participated in track and field for two years, and was a member of the Warriors cross country team for five.

O’Connor-Brook has not decided on an area of study, but enjoys Humanities, Environmental Science, and Social Work.

She joins Marion Ruf and Alyson McPhetres in the Nanooks’ recruiting class of 2010.
